WASHINGTON, D.C. - Jack Smith, the special counsel appointed to investigate former President Donald Trump, has indicted Trump on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States. The indictment, which was returned by a grand jury on Tuesday, alleges that Trump conspired to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election by submitting false electoral certificates to Congress.

This is the first criminal charge to be brought against Trump by Smith, who was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022. Smith, a former war crimes prosecutor, is known for his hard-driving and flinty approach to investigations.

The indictment alleges that Trump and his allies pressured state officials to change the results of the election in their favor. It also alleges that Trump submitted false electoral certificates to Congress, which he knew to be fraudulent. The indictment charges Trump with one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has called the investigation a "witch hunt." He has also vowed to fight the charges "every step of the way."
